A family heirloom. A rare period antique. A chair that belonged to someone irreplaceable. Whatever its origin, a piece of furniture that carries meaning — historical, monetary, or deeply personal — deserves the care of a craftsman who understands what is at stake.

StrathamWood Studios accepts a select number of restoration commissions each year, bringing the same precision and intentionality to the preservation of existing work as to the creation of new pieces.

The Philosophy

Restoration at StrathamWood Studios is never about making a piece look new. The goal is something more respectful than that — a gentle return to a state that is age-appropriate, well-considered, and honest to the piece's history. The patina of a well-lived life is part of what makes an old piece beautiful. It is preserved, not erased.Work may involve the restoration of a finish, the repair of structural elements, or a combination of both. Every situation is unique, and every project begins with a conversation.

Understanding Value

Not all value is monetary — and this distinction matters enormously in restoration work. A piece may carry significant historical or market value yet mean little to its owner personally. Another piece may be entirely ordinary by any objective measure, yet hold a depth of personal meaning that makes it irreplaceable. Both are equally worthy of care. But the nature of the value shapes the conversation about investment. A useful exercise is what might be called the threshold of pain — an honest reflection on what you would be willing to spend on a particular piece, given what it means to you. That number, whatever it is, becomes a practical guide for the scope of restoration and ensures that client and craftsman are aligned from the outset.

A Note on Scope

Restoration is, by nature, a process of discovery. Hidden damage, previous repair attempts, and conditions concealed beneath a finish can only be revealed once the work has begun. The threshold conversation is therefore not only a useful budgeting tool — it is an essential one. It allows the work to proceed thoughtfully, with a shared understanding of priorities, even when the unexpected arises.
